Home Defense 101: Answering Your Door
Because of the seriousness of home invasions and burglary, I was happy to see The Prepper Journal give eight excellent tips for safely answering your door. Depending upon where you live, property crime (burglary, larceny, theft, etc.) may have increased. Cities with a population of over 1,000,000 showed an increase in 2017 of around .5%. (According to the FBI) So, if you live in a city with a population of one million or more you should remain ever wary. Also, even if you do live in a smaller town, these steps, in answering your door, make sense and should be used whenever possible.
First of all, if you don’t know who is at the door, be cautious.
If you have no clue who the person at the door could possibly be, that’s the cue to start being cautious. Granted, some of the tips are basic (door chains); however, a reminder to use them doesn’t hurt anyone.

Some of the best advice given though is to find out who is at the door before you open it. This advice seems very basic and may just be considered to be common sense. But, very often people just open the front door as soon as they can.
The last and final option to increase visibility may be the most obvious. It’s also the most affordable. If you have windows near the door or any other means of flanking the person to get a peek at them, by all means, please use them.
